Selling your soul

Stacie Hartman, a Marine veteran, is one of the thousands of Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers (BCTGM) union members demanding a fair contract from Kellogg’s.

Hartman has worked at the Kellogg’s plant in Lancaster, Pa. for 11 years. Members of the BCTGM Union are asking Kellogg’s to remove its two-tier employment system which allows the company to split its workforce and offer new employees lower starting wages and fewer benefits.

The union argues that all workers should be compensated equally for doing the same work. Kellogg’s says that they need to keep the two-tier system to remain profitable even as they announced that 2020 was a strong year financially.

On Dec. 7, 2021, the union rejected a tentative agreement with Kellogg’s to return to work and remains on the picket line fighting for a better contract. Kellogg’s says it plans to permanently replace all of the striking employees and is done bargaining with the union.
